First Steps in Therapy & Coaching
Finding the underlying cause of your issue is the first step that lays the foundations for permanent change.
These examples from actual cases illustrate the relationship between cause and sympton and highlight why it is important to address issues from the root.
"I want to lose weight but I eat because it comforts the loneliness in me"
Diets alone will not work when your weight control efforts are being sabotaged by your inner loneliness.
Addressing the anxiety and other factors surrounding the loneliness becomes the first step that leads to an easy release. It's important that losing weight no longer means giving up possibly the best friend you have at the moment.
As the feelings of loneliness are addressed, you find other behaviours taking their place and you find yourself making choices that lead to weight control becoming a natural option for you.
You no longer have to eat to feed the hole of loneliness and a welcome bonus is that your life begins to feel more full and rewarding.

"I want to write a screenplay but I keep putting it off. Deep down I know if I fail, my only dream will be over and there will be nothing left in my life. No hope. Nothing."
Rejection, abandonment and their impact on self-worth are debilitating for many people on several levels. Even the most outwardly-confident people can have inner demons snapping at their heels pushing them on to be perfect and never fail.
Self-image can become dependent on inner hopes and dreams that then become cherished and untouchable. Sometimes procrastination becomes a way of protecting self-image.
By addressing these issues, the release that is achieved not only allows that screenplay to be written with confidence and pleasure, it also brings more opportunities into your field of vision.
"Everytime I plan my exercise regime, I fall ill, get an injury or something else happens to stop me. Last time, my daughter fell seriously ill just two days into my routine!"
This interesting pattern means looking at the subconscious elements sabotaging the very real desire to get fit and in shape.
Similar to the "Screenplay" example, the elements relate to protecting the self-image but are hidden away at a deeper level and cause a great deal of stress.
In very simple terms, the "things that happen" (including symptoms generated by your own body) become convenient and urgent ways of protecting the dream and not having to face the potential threat of failure and all the things that "failure" signifies.
Under ordinary circumstances, the illness of the daughter would have been a "normal" illness. However, under the mindset generated, the illness has the effect of a superstitious signal of doom. The panic that is caused internally literally causes emotional blindness where it becomes impossible to see in perspective.
Once these elements have been isolated and addressed, the pattern is quickly broken. The reasons for the fear that caused the self-sabotage and internal distress have been identified and resolved.
You find things no longer have a fateful way of undermining your goal of getting fit. Your self-image is stronger, brighter and energised.
